Many occupations involve working in cold conditions, ranging from outdoor tasks in cold climates to indoor work in food storage freezers. Suitable clothing needs to be incorporate a range of properties to enable wearers to perform their work. The clothing must be lightweight so as not to impede the wearer but it must be sufficiently insulating, in temperatures potentially as low as -50 degrees C to keep the wearer at a comfortable temperature. The clothing must be wind-resistant and should also have a degree of water vapour permeability to prevent the unacceptable build-up of moisture from perspiration inside the garment.

Clothing claiming protection against the cold, and which is to be placed on the European market, falls within the scope of the European Personal Protective Equipment Directive (Council Directive 89/686/EEC). Products are required to be submitted for third party independent testing and also require an EC type examination certificate from a Notified Body, such as SATRA, before they can be sold in Europe. To help with this process the European standards body, CEN, has published European Standard EN 342:2004 Protective clothing (ensembles and garments) for protection aganst the cold.

The principal test in EN 342 uses a heated manikin to acess a complete garment or ensemble. The aim of this test is to determine the total thermal insulation of the garment. The manikin is first dressed in the underwear specified in the standard, then dressed with the test garment. During the test the manikin is heated to, and maintained at, a specified temperature above ambient. Thermal insulation is determined from the power required to maintain the various sections of the manikin surface (torso, arms, legs etc) this constant (elevated) temperature.

The total thermal insulation value is used to classify the performance of the garment. It can also be used to estimate the maximum duration of wear based on the activity level of the wearer, the temperature of the environment and the insulation value of the clothing. These wear duration guidelines are given in an informative annex of the standard.

Other tests required by EN 342:2004 include measurement of air permeability (for assessment of the water resistance of the material) which is classified using tests carried out on the garment’s least air-permeability layer. The garment’s outer fabric must also meet defined minimum criteria for tear strength. An optional test is resistance to water penetration (a hydrostatic head test), which has two performance level classifications. Clothing that claims this optional property must also be breathable and pass a test with the water vapour resistance of the complete material ensemble i.e. outer, insulation and lining.

There is a wide variety of leather types and qualities being used in footwear manufacturing today but the best without doubt is Full Grain Cow leather in excess of 2mm thick - just like what use on our V12’s

Cow leather has the best combination of strength, breathability and water resistance. No stiff, cheap buffalo leathers round here!

So whats so good about expensive leather?

a.. Good breathability is essential for healthy feet. One customer who used to suffer from Atheletes foot recently reported that since choosing one of our styles the problem has disappeared - result!

b.. Good leathers last longer. We buy the best quality hides, selected for their tear strength, pH balance and breathabilty. The hides are impregnated with natural oils during the tanning process to give a supple water resistant finish which can be revived time after time with a suitable leather food

c.. Of course, they look great too!
So when you sell a pair of V12s you can be confident that your customer is getting the best there is, and that they will come back for more.

1) Keep your feet dry! First, be sure to wear socks (X01 & X02) that wick moisture away from your feet, Second, thoroughly dry the inside of your boots by wadding up newspaper and placing it inside the boot to absorb moisture.2) Consider activity levels when deciding the proper insulation/comfort rating

If you’re driving a forklift or reach truck, a higher level of insulation will be required to keep the feet warm and safe. Also, if you have circulation problems, consider a higher level of insulation.

3) Thermoplastic and steel toes are capable of resisting a heavy falling objective. Safety toes protect you from injury and down time.

4) Wet conditions require a boot that has more surface contact. Consider your environment and slip resistance ratings to choose the best boots.

5) Cold store boots should not fit too tightly. To provide proper insulation, some air space is needed between the foot and the lining of the boots. When sizing boots, try them on at the end of each day when your foot is a little larger from swelling.

6) Choose the height of the upper base on the amount of leg support needed.

7) To make laces last longer, pull them sideways to tighten, do not pull straight.

8 Never put leather boots near direct heat. It destroys the leather, melts the sole materials and causes bonding agents to lose their grip.

Keep your hands dry! First, be sure to wear liners (G21 & G23) that wick moisture away from the hands, and have an extra pair for mid-day changes. Secondly, thoroughly dry the inside of you glove by wadding up newspaper and placing it inside the glove to absorb moisture. Fully open your gloves when drying.

Consider activity levels when deciding the proper insulation/comfort rating. If you’re driving a forklift for example a higher level of insulation will be required to keep the hands warm and safe. More active jobs require lower insulation level. Also if you have circulation problems consider a higher level of insulation for increased safety.

Gloves should not fit too tight. To provide proper insulation, air should be able to circulate between the hand and glove. When sizing gloves try them on at the end of the day when your hand is a little larger from swelling.

Never put leather gloves near direct heat.

In November 1904 the first Holt track-type tractor was tested in California USA. The machine with its crawling tracks was said to resemble a caterpillar. In 1910 Holt registered caterpillar as a trademark and in 1925 Holt manufacturing company and CL Best tractor Co. merged to form Caterpillar. When Holt and Best joined forces they built the company based on progress and integrity. In the early 1990’s caterpillar moved in to consumer orientated-branded merchandise, providing functional footwear and workwear. Today, a range of cat branded merchandise is available through Delf Workwear & Leisurewear

Innovation with a purpose. Snickers workwear has been at the creative and technological forefront for more than 30 years now. Not just for the fun of it, but to meet real needs as they evolve and change. Taking advantage of the latest developments in advanced materials, for example. And always looking for new ways to improve on-the-job functionally, safety and comfort
